Dear Gay Games IV & Cultural Festival participants:

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and thousands of volunteers which comprise Gay Games IV & Cultural Festival, it is my privilege to welcome you to New York City. We've been planning and preparing for over five years to ensure that your trip to the Big Apple will raise your spirit and heighten the world's consciousness regarding the lives of gays and lesbians everywhere.

The week I spent at Gay Games III was one of the most exciting, unforgettable weeks of my life. After nine years of covering hundreds of events for ABC-TV sports and living a closeted life, I came out to the thunderous applause of Vancouver's Opening Ceremonies for Gay Games III. Another time that stands out for me is when I moved to New York City. Walking down Christopher Street for the first time and seeing so many visible lesbians and gays still makes me smile ten years later.

Both events inspired me and gave me the courage to be open, visible and, most importantly, to work for change. Gay Games IV will have an enormous impact in breaking down negative and harmful stereotypes about lesbians, gay men bisexual and transgender people; in promoting positive role models and in affirming the spirit, enthusiasm, and well-being of our community. In addition, Gay Games IV will show that people living with HIV and AIDS can and do lead vital, productive, competitive, and meaningful lives. Games really can change the world.

As you watch or participate, please remember that first and foremost, these are volunteer Games. None of the events would happen without the thousands of volunteers who have tirelessly shaped, planned and implemented these Games. Don't forget to thank them as you're out and about.

We all hope this week will be a hallmark in your life and inspire you to greater accomplishments. Our best wishes for achieving your personal best on the stages, fields and courts of New York.
